Advanced Technical Skills (ATS) training


Key to the success of DREAM research is the provision of advanced technical training to the doctoral researchers. DREAM seeks to address the sponsor NERC’s priority skills in the area of risk and uncertainty (NERC/LWECs 2012 ‘Most Wanted Postgraduate and Professional Skills in the Environment Sector’). The training approach in DREAM will foster cross-disciplinary skills in risk and uncertainty alongside practical knowledge from industrial and policy perspectives pertaining to the integration of Big Data science into policy and decision-making. Researchers will work across the natural/ social science boundaries and develop experience of working within multi-disciplinary teams to deliver excellence in research applied to practical solutions.

Research themes will address quantitative risk assessment, uncertainty modelling, risk and uncertainty communication, risk evaluation and the management of uncertainty. These elements will be embedded into the direct understanding of the needs and requirements of industry and policy practitioners. Students will become familiar with industrial best practice, standard and advanced risk techniques and leading-edge research developments applicable to the environmental sectors, complemented with expertise in the latest data-informatics methods.

During the first two years of Doctoral studies, DREAM students will undertake seven training modules, drawn from the list below – decided upon in concert with the supervision team and respecting the research topic.
